STEM Lesson Focuses on Diverse Learners
The challenge of creating my STEM lesson was to incorporate the aspect of diversity for my students. I feel that a lot of females feel that science is just for boys. That is why I encouraged my female students to do research on a female scientist and report on the results of their research. I feel that is is important for young girls to have female role models in science. My students were also encouraged to report on minority scientists and their contributions to the study of the ocean floor. The 5 E’s strategy was helpful to remind me to Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate. If you can hook the student into the lesson and retain their interest, the rest is easy

I really appreciate how you continue to recognize and inspire your female studnets! You also reminded me to always consider my ell students (I don't have any and should always be prepared for them). Great early finisher work with scientist research. That activity should work with all students who are given the opportunity to research their favorite scientist.
ReplyDeleteGreat Idea!
ReplyDeleteFemale and minority students need to see familiar faces in the sciences. I liked that you encourages your students to investigate the contributions of minority scientist on the ocean floor ( I really like the lesson because the field was small and this allows students to see that they can be any type of scientist, not just a doctor, etc.).
